Mucin Peptides
High molecular weight
O-glycoproteins
Mucins (MUCs) are a family of high molecular weight O-glycoproteins found on epithelial cells and mucin-secreting goblet cells. The chief characteristics of mucins are its variable number of tandem repeats region, which consists of Thr/Ser/Pro-rich peptides whose occurrences and number vary within the peptide backbone.
MUC-1, for instance is expressed in almost all solid tumors and some leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and breast cancer cells. It is also overexpressed in adenocarcinomas and hence a target for immunotherapeutic strategies.
